Summer Feeding Sites Serve Local Students
During the school year, many families rely on the school lunch program to make sure their children have a nutritious meal five days a week. The backpack program helps those same children on the weekends during the school year. But, what about during the summer?
That’s where Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Agency steps in as both a sponsor and vendor of the Summer Food Service Program.
This summer in Athens and Hocking County, 840 children are enjoying lunch, and in some cases breakfast, thanks to the Summer Feeding Program, a federal program through the U.S. Department of Agriculture that offers free meals to all children 18 and younger or any person 19 to 21, who is mentally or physically disabled. Leading the way with 250 lunches served per day is Nelsonville Family Center, which serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday at the Nelsonville City Pool.
“Summer feeding is taking on more significance in the lives of families this year then in years past because so many families are struggling to make ends meet,” said Dick Stevens, HAPCAP Food & Nutrition Division director. “The daily lunch that the children enjoy makes it easier for those families in need.”
